A Band Called "O" 4 Albums

A Band Called "O"

A Band Called "O" appeared on The Man Band website that I was looking at to confirm the status of the Keystone album and I just had to follow up on them. I saw them live once, and they were possibly supporting the Man Band (as I saw them live Many Many times). This band made an appearance on Radio for John Peel's obituary something I would really like to hear.

You would not believe how difficult it is to find any information on this band and just as difficulty to get hold of their music. It looks as if I could get a copy of The Knife (On CD) for as little as £5 plus postage (which I will look into in a couple of weeks). The third album is also available on CD. Perhaps I will try what I did with Tim Blake - 1978 - Blake's New Jerusalem and that is whenever I went to a different town I made an enquiry under different names at many HMV shops and then suddenly I was told it was coming out soon. Perhaps there was a SUDDEN demand all over the country. (hee hee!)

1975 - Oasis

Now I definately remember seeing this in record shops - It is laughable that when I search for info on this on the web I get Oasis "A Band Called O" and not A Band Called O "Oasis". Dunno much about Oasis but I dont think they were around back then.

Oasis presents a confident and accomplished performance, and it's hard to find anything not to like about the O Band's second album. Several tracks, notably Some People, Amovin' and Fine White Wine, are approaching perfection. Recorded in December 1974 at Morgan Studios in London, and released during 1975.

Tracks:

01 Amovin'
02 Foolin' Round
03 Sleeping
04 Morrocan Roll

1976 - Within Reach

Recorded at Olympic Studios in Barnes, from March to May in 1976 and released later that year. The album sleeve was designed by Joe Petagno, who also provided the faintly erotic full sized poster that was included with the original UK editions.

The Repertoire CD release from 1994 includes as bonus tracks the 7" single version of A Smile Is Diamond, the B Side Coasting, and Love Ain't A Keeper, which backed Almost Saturday Night from the subsequent album The Knife. Which are included here.

1977 - The Knife

February 1977 saw the O Band in Scorpio Studios and Marquee Studios in London, recording what would prove to be the last of the band's four albums. "Almost Saturday Night" is a CCR cover and I saw it said somewhere that "Look To The Left - Look To The Right" was a Spirit song although I cannot find any refernce to this and I looked and looked - I reckon I have almost all Randy California that was released and it isn't in my collection and also it does not appear on the Tent Of Miracles website at all. The song does sound similar to the Spirit sound though so please comment on that if you know more.

Tracks:

01 Look To The Left, Look To The Right
02 Almost Saturday Night
03 I'm Gonna Leave You
04 Strange Lovin
05 Back Alley Lightnin'

Craig Anders (Guitars)
Jeff Bannister (Keyboards, vocals)
Mark Anders (Bass, vocals)
Derek Ballard (Drums, percussion, vocals)
Produced by Del Newman, Doug Bennett and O

Only sampled @128 hence the mix of first 2 albums in one post and second two in another. As far as I know there would be one or two other tracks released on singles and certainly there were 4 Peel Sessions as well as the Peel Tribute recording. I will be grateful for any links to Artwork and Higher Sampled songs by this excellent 70's rock outfit from the UK.

Bruce Haack - 1968 - The Electric Lucifer (Psychadelic@192)

Bruce Haack, born on May 4, 1931, was one of the most musically and lyrically inventive children's songwriters of the '60s and '70s. Despite — or perhaps because of — his intended audience, his music was unusually expressive, combining homemade analog synths; classical, country, pop, and rock elements; and surreal, idealistic lyrics. Haack's innovations and desire to teach still sound fresh, making his music a favorite with fans of analog synths and esoteric recordings. Followers like Luke Vibert and Add N to X championed his unique musical vision, which embraced concepts like "powerlove" and turned household appliances into synthesizers and modulators. This musical vision appeared at age four, when Haack started picking out melodies on his family's piano; by age 12, he gave piano lessons and played in country & western bands as a teen. His upbringing in the isolated mining town of Rocky Mountain House in Alberta, Canada, gave Haack plenty of time to develop his musical gifts. Seeking formal training to hone his ability, Haack applied to the University of Alberta's music program. Though that school rejected him because of his poor notation skills, at Edmonton University he wrote and recorded music for campus theater productions, hosted a radio show, and played in a band. He received a degree in psychology from the university; this influence was felt later in songs that dealt with body language and the computer-like ways children absorb information.

The Incredible String Band - 1966 - The Incredible String Band

One of the most engaging groups to emerge from the esoteric '60s was the Incredible String Band. Basically the duo of Mike Heron and Robin Williamson, its sound was comprised of haunting Celtic folk melodies augmented by a variety of Middle Eastern and Asian instruments. Heron was a member of several rock bands in England in the early '60s, while Williamson and Clive Palmer played as a bluegrass and Scottish folk duo. Heron was asked to join as rhythm guitarist, and the trio named itself the Incredible String Band. The band was spotted at a club by Joe Boyd, who was opening a British wing of Elektra Records. The trio gave Boyd a demo tape of mostly American bluegrass standards with a few original songs, which impressed him more than the standards. The Incredible String Band, released in 1966, featured mostly original numbers enthusiastically played in American and Celtic folk styles. Following the album's release, Williamson spent several months studying music in Morocco, and Palmer left the group to travel to Afghanistan. For the String Band's second album, The 5000 Spirits or the Layers of the Onion, exotic touches such as the Middle Eastern oud, Indian sitars, and tambouras began to permeate the group's sound. The band's lyrics also became more whimsical; highlights include Williamson's tale of insomnia "No Sleep Blues" and Heron's amorous "Painting Box."The press raved about the Incredible String Band, and their next album, The Hangman's Beautiful Daughter, was the band's brief flirtation with stardom. Although the music was less commercial than its predecessor, the LP reached the Top Ten in the British album charts and was also the group's highest Billboard chart placing in America, reaching number 161. The songs became less structured, as on the opening, "Koeeoaddi There," which changed tempo frequently as it cascaded joyously with sitars and jaw harp. The album's centerpiece, "A Very Cellular Song," was a suite of short pieces sewn together with the folk song "Bid You Goodnight." For Wee Tam and the Big Huge, the Incredible String Band was augmented by Williamson and Heron's girlfriends, Licorice McKechnie and Rose Simpson. The group also began to electrically amplify its instruments. This expanded lineup performed at the Woodstock festival in 1969, but due to circumstances it was not one of the band's most memorable performances. The Incredibles' slot was originally to be Friday night after Joan Baez; however, due to heavy rain, the band opted not to perform. Folksinger Melanie took the Incredibles' place and went down extremely well, writing her big hit "Candles in the Rain" about that moment. The Incredible String Band got a lukewarm reception the next afternoon between Creedence Clearwater Revival and Canned Heat.At the turn of the '70s, the Incredible String Band began to lose some of their momentum. The album Changing Horses was not as engaging as the band's previous collections, and the group's eclecticism became a liability rather than an asset. Bassist and pantomimist Malcolm LeMaistre joined in 1971 for U, a well-received stage show that did not translate as easily to record. The band made the transition to electric rock & roll in 1972.In 1974, following the album Hard Rope & Silken Twine, the Incredible String Band disbanded. Both founding members had prolific solo careers; Heron's took him in a rock direction, while Williamson explored his Celtic roots. For several years the band was seen as a dated anachronism. Recently, with the resurgence in interest in the psychedelic '60s as well as world music, the Incredible String Band's music has been rediscovered by new audiences won over by its mystical charm.

Circulus - 1999 - Giantism [EP]

Circulus - 1999 - Giantism [EP]

1 Little Big Song
2 The True Lover's Farewell
3 My Lady Carey's Dompe
4 Everglade
5 Sombrero Fallout
6 All You People

The tracks differ from various UK acid folkrock drenged pop to acid folk pop. Included is also a beautiful folk version of the medieval "My Lady Carey's Dompe". The folk pop songs are nice too. The accompanying instrumental work out is very colourful and with proportioned contrasts. In that way the usual way to interprete / elaborate traditionals has been beautifully enriched.
Other quotes from a review of Giantism in Ptolomaic Terrascope :
..."Fronted by the delightfully-named Emma Steele, a vocalist who has clearly spent an hour-or-two in the thrall of Celia Humpries, and with devastating skills invested throughout its membership, not least in the West-Coast guitar work of Eric Anholm and various instruments of Michal Tyack (guitar, lute, banjo and saz), Circulus are poised to storm the citadel of electric tradition in emphatic fasion."...
..."The songs are both craftily constructed and the instrumentation thrusts them into the realm of the extraordinary : make no mistake, Circulus are traditionalist with panache and folk-rock torchbleachers of Olympian proportions."

Man - 1972 - Live At The Padget Rooms Penarth

In response to a request I give you one of my favourite albums. This, and my copy of Captain Beefheart's "Trout Mask Replica" are my 2 most favoured musical possessions. There are one or two others, The Moody Blues "Question Of Balance" well... there are many many more prized possessions. Nektar, Gong and others were amongst my listening in the early 70's. I have a JohnMorgan album that I have never seen "Online".

Anyway. The first appearance of Many Are Called (But Few Get Up) came here, with the Daughter Of The Fireplace showcasing Deke wonderfully. The H. Samuel Jam comes straight from the earlier Man - 1970 release. I am happy to share (even if it is just 1 request that called for this). Man fans should read as I made a few Man Band posts on another Blog recently.

I guess I owe the moderator of this Blog an apology as I linked to a different Blog, but I suspect that I am forgiven as this will be my only link. A big week for me as I am about to work in Singapore for 2 weeks or more. No Blogging !!! Sheesh. Life goes on.

Oh. The links for this post (almost forgotten) = My wife is ironing and interrupting me as I watch a Dr Who episode from long ago. If I ever get some time I will sort out what the wife wants. These are true trials of family life (not what you see on TV = LOL). My 3 year old son loves Neil Innes, and I am very happy to play Neil Innes (as I love him too). I guess I will get a few posts in during the next week and concentrate on recovering the Blue - In Concet when I get back.

Ah yes...

Padget Rooms

Please Note. A request was made (on behalf) of the Man Band themselves to remove the Keystone "official" bootleg as it was something that allowed the Man Band to actually make money off (It's not something the Record Companies milk before the lads get any money). I understood what the person making the request meant and have deleted the uploads too. Sorry to anyone who wanted to download,, BUT, I do so like the Man Band and do not want to offend them. I have a lot of their original material Many Albums, CD's and all their DVD's. I consider myself a fan and would not want to cause Deke, Micky and the rest any financial loss.

Cochise - 1970 - Cochise

Zaragon on Myspace says of this:
Country rock to graciously court the country-hater. Think not of Creedence
or the Allmans; imagine instead a gritty Free or Patto-style unit who
sprinkle their dish with a tasty dash of twang, thereby spicing their forays
into dissonant aggression ("Moment and the End") and giving zest to their
exercises in compound song structure ("Painted Lady").

In answer to the request for more Cochise here is their first (with the third to follow).

1.Velvet Mountain
2.China
3.Trafalgar Day
4.Moment And The End
5.Watch This Space
6.59th Street Bridge Song
7.Past Loves
8.Painted Lady

This is a 256 rip complete with covers. Apparently there is a CD version with a bonus track that I do not have "
Black Is The Colour".

Peter Howell - 1969 - Alice Through The Looking Glass

1 A Sitting On A Gate
2 Alice Meets The Knights
3 Dance To The Talking Flower
4 Dum And Dee
5 Her Majesty Queen Alice
6 Jabberwocky
7 The Alice Theme
8 The March Of The Chessmen
9 Through The Looking Glass

This concept album based upon the writings of Lewis Carroll was the work of the same persons responsible for Agincourt, Ithaca and Tomorrow Come Some Day. This album is reputedly the best of the four - an amalgam of folk and psychedelia with surrealistic lyrics. According to 'Record Collector' the market value of this gem is around £750. David Wells' excellent sleeve-notes to the recent Tenth Planet reissue reveal more about the duo.

In late 1968 they were approached by a local amateur dramatics group called The Ditching Players to provide a musical backdrop for a stage version of 'Alice Through The Looking Glass'. They used Lewis Carroll's surreal verse as the backdrop to the project and added a variety of studio trickery - backwards tapes, sound effects, distorted vocals etc. - to create a uniquely English hybrid of folk and pastoral psychedelia. Fifty copies were pressed initially which sold quickly and the duo pressed a further twenty-thirty. The sleeve artwork utilised a sketch by Sir John Tennel (the original Alice illustrator) of Alice encountering Tweedledee and Tweedledum! The duo continued to record a number of other albums over the next ten years - Tomorrow Come Some Day (a concept piece featuring a village threatened by motorway expansion), To Fly Away (credited to semi-ficticious group Agincourt) and A Game For All Who Know (credited to Ithaca). All had limited edition pressings of between fifty to a hundred. After a fifth album Friends the collaboration ended when Peter Howell, who composed all the music on Alice Through The Looking Glass was offered a more demanding job at the BBC and ceased to have time to pursue his hobby with John Fernando.

Framework - Skeleton (1968-69)

Framework is best remembered by San Diego rock historians as a wildly inventive power trio that wore dirty blue jeans on stage and made a mindblowing 45 that nobody can find. That may fix a picture in your mind of who the band were and what they were about- but as you play through this collection of tapes from the band’s archives you will find, like I did, that they were quite versatile. Framework only released one single, and after hearing the psychedelic dirge that is “The Direction”, and speaking with a few guys whose eyes glazed over when asked about the group, it became a personal quest of mine to find out everything I could about them. It was four years before I had collected enough material to assemble Skeleton (the story is told in considerable detail inside the poster sleeve of the vinyl edition...due to space limitations of the CD format, what follows is an abbreviated text) and the various pieces provide separate and distinct views of the band that I believe, as a whole, comprise a comprehensive document that is long overdue. As I listen to it now, I can’t help but wonder what kind of albums Framework would have produced circa 1968-1970 with the support of say... Probe, or Metromedia Records. Even as a local act struggling to pay their rent, they seem to have never been lacking in inspiration... but turned loose on the world? “Reach the misty edge of freedom, and do just what you want to. You will feel the change that can come.”

Framework was born of two mid-sixties San Diego bands, The Orfuns and The Centaurs. In one respect, these two bands were very different- The Orfuns were a hard-edged, arrogant garage punk outfit that wrote original songs (a handful of acetates in guitarist/vocalist Jerry McCann’s possession bear this out, and some of this material will see a release in the near future), whereas The Centaurs were a dance band that performed covers. Knowing full well by 1967 that performing original material was the key to both credibility and longevity in the rock scene, the new lineup looked to McCann as their lead singer and songwriter for their repertoire. Naturally, McCann quickly established himself as the creative focus of the band, which he named Framework. This new band, along with The Brain Police, was managed by the KB Artists company of San Diego. The first recording session arranged by this management/record label cooperative was to produce a single by Framework in January, 1968. The two songs recorded, “Iron Door” and “Funny Kind Of Sunshine” never made it to vinyl as planned. Instead, only a handful of acetates were made for the band and for the local underground radio station, KPRI. To date, this is the only known recording of the original five-piece Framework, and these tracks appear for the first time ever on Skeleton. Framework Mk.I persevered, despite internal conflict, until August 1968. When it became clear that the band could not continue as it was, McCann asked the advice of his friend David Randle of The Brain Police. By chance, Randle had only recently learned of Terry Fann, a singer and bass player looking for a band. Fann sat in with the band for a couple of weeks, and it became clear to (the ex-Orfuns) McCann and Carl Spiron that Fann was the ingredient they needed to head in a new direction: as a trio. Groups like Cream and the Jimi Hendrix Experience were exploring new territory as trios and were being credited as innovators; why not Framework? (buy it)

The Maggots - 2001 - This Condition Is Incurable

Review By Tom Schulte

Stockholm's The Maggots explode with energy and a snotty sneer on this premium garage rock revival disc. Their fearsome fuzz and gruesome guitar sound is vital, visceral rock-n-roll. There was a garage wave in Scandinavia in the '80's and Mans P. Mansson (guitar/vocals) was part of that movement as part of Wylde Mammoths (one of the first bands to record for Crypt Records), Crimson Shadows and Friends. Bassist Steffen Hellstrom was also in Wylde Mammoths and Friends and Jonas Lundberg (drums) has a past in Slammer and A-Bombs.

These journeyman psychedelic rockers combine their experience and vigor for this more-than-suitable follow-up to their excellent debut LP, Get Hooked (Low Impact Records). Also, available on 10" vinyl, this CD edition includes three bonus tracks taken from the Gonna Make You Pay 7" on Bad Afro. While their originals rock sufficient to carry this disc to dawn and back, they include some righteous covers: a searing "Boy From Nowhere" (DMZ) and the workout for their two guitarists from The Turpentines, "Heading For The Texas Border," also covered by the Flamin' Groovies.

Cochise - Swallow Tales (1971)

BJ Cole had this to say about Cochise:

Cochise was in existence for only three years between 1969 and 1972, but in that time we recorded three albums (a total of 28 tracks) and Mick Grabham and I went on to make solo albums for United Artists. This CD compilation contains the sixteen best tracks we recorded (in my opinion) from the three albums Cochise, Swallow Tales and So Far, including our US top 100 hit Love's Made A Fool Of You. The tracks are consecutive, and are listed under the title of each album. We were signed to United Artists records in 1969 by Andrew Lauder. Our label mates were an assorted bunch of bands that reflected Andrew's forward thinking policies – High Tide, Brinsley Schwarz, Hawkwind, Man etc. We played colleges, festivals, and places like the Roundhouse and the Marquee, and were managed by Clearwater Productions who also looked after Hawkwind and High Tide. It was altogether a very 'heady' time.

Although their first album had shown potential - It was this, the second of three albums that stands out as Cochise's "Finest Moments".

Singer Stewart Brown suddenly left the band being replaced by John Gilbert which changed the sound slightly making it a bit more Rock orientated. This album took longer and had more attention to detail put on it than the first and is generally very pleasing throughout. Steve Marriot guested on one song which was almost a hit. But, that 'almost' seemed to leave the band in 'No Man's Land' - they made one more album and all went on to happier days in other directions. I'd love to have thought that they could have became as big as the Byrds or such - But well There is still Swallow Tales to remember them.

B. J. Cole-pedal steel, guitar, dobro
Ricky Wills-bass, vocals, percussion
Willie Wilson-drums, percussion, vocals
John Gilbert-vocals
Mick Grabham-guitars & vocals

01 - Love's Made A Fool Of You (02:51)
02 - Jed Collder (03:18)
03 - Down Country Girls (01:49)
04 - Home Again (03:41)
05 - Lost Hearts (03:25)
06 - Strange Images (02:03)
07 - Where I Sing The Blues (04:09)
08 - Another Day (05:16)
09
- Axiom Of Maria (07:02)
10
- Can I Break Your Heart (05:03)
11
- O Come All Ye Faithful (01:20)

By 1973 Mick Grabham had made a solo album and would join Procol Harum.
BJ Cole went on to become a popular session musician.
Rick Wills and John "Willie" Wilson played on Dave Gilmour's first solo album.

This is a 320 Vinyl rip with 2 sets of covers both at hi res but having slightly different shading.

Although they would be classified as Country Rock - I would say they were not that at all - But there is an undeniably country feel at times.

Joni Mitchell - 1974 - Miles Of Aisles (Live)

Miles of Aisles is a 1974 double live album by Joni Mitchell backed by the L.A. Express, recorded on the Court and Spark tour. The release became famous for the quality of the performances and some of Mitchell's onstage banter, particularly the "Van Gogh" speech before going into "The Circle Game." She closes the set with two new songs, "Jericho" and "Love or Money." Four years after "Big Yellow Taxi" stalled at #67 on the charts in its original studio version, the live version heard on Miles of Aisles was released as a single and reached #24 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts, becoming Mitchell's third top 40 hit and continuing her commercial hot streak at the time. Miles of Aisles would reach a peak of #2 on the charts and became one of her biggest-selling records.

7 Stop The World
8 Baby Blue

13 Serene - Alt. Version

Garrath Lund was part of the Caretakers, a band which opened before the great psychrock bands of that time. He recorded this album but no label was interested. Releasing it privately it sold with the help of radio promotion 2000 copies in less than two weeks, but still there was no label to release it officially. So after 26 years this finally is the first release.

The album can be compared to the kind of albums of singer-songwriters with a deeper concentration to the music with electric arrangements, far away from other influences and with a time taken to develop, like what John Saint Field or so did, but here with a west coast direction, and with some attention to some sweet acidic development of the electric guitar, backed by a rock band.

The voice goes from normal to higher notes, with emotional calm perspectives with closed eyes.
"Serene" has a fine production of keyboards (mellotron and electric piano by Angie Gudino).

The Superfine Dandelion - 1967 - s/t

Rare psych/garage pop album by US '60s band who sound like a cross between The Byrds, Buffalo Springfield and The Charlatans. Stripped down psychedelic rock from the late 60s Phoenix scene. The group takes influences of some of the most swirling sounds of the era -- The grooves of the San Francisco sounds blended with the more rural bits of the post folk boom.

Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young - 1970 - Déjà Vu

1. Carry On
2. Teach Your Children
3. Almost Cut My Hair
4. Helpless
5. Woodstock
6. Deja Vu
7. Our House
8. 4 + 20
9. Country Girl: Whiskey Boot Hill/Down, Down, Down/"Country Girl" (I Think You're Pretty)
10. Everybody I Love You

According to my opinion this is one of the best albums ever made. If you don't already have it don't miss it! I recommend you to buy it!

From AMG
One of the most hotly awaited second albums in history -- right up there with those by the Beatles and the Band -- Déjà Vu lived up to its expectations and rose to number one on the charts. Those achievements are all the more astonishing given the fact that the group barely held together through the estimated 800 hours it took to record Déjà Vu and scarcely functioned as a group for most of that time. Déjà Vu worked as an album, a product of four potent musical talents who were all ascending to the top of their game coupled with some very skilled production, engineering, and editing. There were also some obvious virtues in evidence -- the addition of Neil Young to the Crosby, Stills & Nash lineup added to the level of virtuosity, with Young and Stephen Stills rising to new levels of complexity and volume on their guitars. Young's presence also ratcheted up the range of available voices one notch and added a uniquely idiosyncratic songwriter to the fold, though most of Young's contributions in this area were confined to the second side of the LP. Most of the music, apart from the quartet's version of Joni Mitchell's "Woodstock," was done as individual sessions by each of the members when they turned up (which was seldom together), contributing whatever was needed that could be agreed upon. "Carry On" worked as the album's opener when Stills "sacrificed" another copyright, "Questions," which comprised the second half of the track and made it more substantial. "Woodstock" and "Carry On" represented the group as a whole, while the rest of the record was a showcase for the individual members. David Crosby's "Almost Cut My Hair" was a piece of high-energy hippie-era paranoia not too far removed in subject from the Byrds' "Drug Store Truck Drivin' Man," only angrier in mood and texture (especially amid the pumping organ and slashing guitars); the title track, also by Crosby, took 100 hours to work out and was a better-received successor to such experimental works as "Mind Gardens," out of his earlier career with the Byrds, showing his occasional abandonment of a rock beat, or any fixed rhythm at all, in favor of washing over the listener with tones and moods. "Teach Your Children," the major hit off the album, was a reflection of the hippie-era idealism that still filled Graham Nash's life, while "Our House" was his stylistic paean to the late-era Beatles and "4+20" was a gorgeous Stephen Stills blues excursion that was a precursor to the material he would explore on the solo album that followed. And then there were Neil Young's pieces, the exquisitely harmonized "Helpless" (which took many hours to get to the slow version finally used) and the roaring country-ish rockers that ended side two, which underwent a lot of tinkering by Young -- even his seeming throwaway finale, "Everybody I Love You," was a bone thrown to longtime fans as perhaps the greatest Buffalo Springfield song that they didn't record. All of this variety made Déjà Vu a rich musical banquet for the most serious and personal listeners, while mass audiences reveled in the glorious harmonies and the thundering electric guitars, which were presented in even more dramatic and expansive fashion on the tour that followed.

Elizabeth was made up of Steve Weingart (lead guitar, harp, organ, vocals), Bob Patterson (guitar, vocals), Jim Dahme (guitar, flute, vocals), Steve Bruno (organ, bass), and Hank Ransome (drums). The band originally came from Philadelphia but moved to New York in 1968, where they recorded and released their self-titled album on Vanguard Records in 1969. The album was released with a wonderful psychedelic-styled collage sleeve that gave the record buyer an impression that the band was a baroque-styled act, yet in actuality it is fairly standard late-'60s rock. The highlights of the album are the fuzz guitar-laden track "You Should Be More Careful," the haunting soft psych of the song "Alarm Rings Five," and the final and best track on the album, "When All Else Fails." The album is rounded out by a few less than interesting good-time-styled rock tracks and has a slight jazz feel in places.

Joni Mitchell - First 5 Albums

Amazing musician, painter and person

With David Crosby and Eric Clapton

I believe that sometimes we lose the meaning of music by just looking for the rare and private stuff and forget some well known artists which are equally as nice if not even better.

So here is Joni's first 5 lp's which are among my all time favorites...

Thanks very much Joni.

From AMG

Although they're rather mistakenly thought of a '60s garage band due to the inclusion of their fine 1965 single, "An Invitation to Cry," on the original Nuggets compilation, the Magicians were an all-around pop/rock group that also drew from folk-rock, blues and soul. They had a pretty intricate history for a short-lived act that only managed to put out four Columbia singles between 1965 and 1967. Drummer and songwriter, Alan Gordon, was playing in an interracial band, Tex & the Chex, in Greenwich Village when they were discovered by record producers Bob Wyld and Art Polhemus. Gordon had written "An Invitation to Cry" with Jimmy Woods(who was not in the band), which Gordon recorded with Tex & the Chex, then including guitarist Mike (who managed Bruce Springsteen for a while during the Boss' early career). The producers wanted a better singer and enlisted Garry Bonner to do the vocals. The resulting recording, "An Invitation to Cry," was superb moody pop/rock with a touch of blue-eyed soul, enhanced by an imaginative production highlighting ominous distorted guitar riffs, graceful tempo shifts, accomplished vocal harmonies and Bonner's anguished lead vocal.

The group, renamed the Magicians, got a deal with Columbia, but reorganized their personnel, with Appel and bassist Everett Jacobs leaving, and Village folkies, Allan "Jake" Jacobs and John Townley, coming in as replacements. The Magicians gained a following in New York by taking over as house band from the Lovin' Spoonful at the Night Owl club. In fact, Felix Pappalardi, future Cream producer and Mountain man, wanted to join them as bassist. They never did come up with another song on the order of "An Invitation to Cry," though, on their two 1966 Columbia singles, which showed an eclectic group conversant with both folk-rock (covering two songs by David Blue) and sophisticated pop-rock. They managed to get a segment on the local CBS television program Eye on New York -- unusually heavy exposure for a group without a hit or album -- but the follow-up singles stiffed. They did some unissued recordings in 1966, but the band never did put out an LP, and around mid 1966, Townley and Jacobs both left.

One subsequent flop single did appear on Columbia in early 1967, with some other musicians helping Bonner, Gordon, and Townley (who played guitar on the A-side, although he was no longer officially in the group). Bonner and Gordon were at this time becoming successful pop/rock songwriters for other artists, particularly the Turtles, for whom they composed "Happy Together," "She'd Rather Be with Me," "You Know What I Mean" and "She's My Girl." A Magicians CD, containing the four singles and some unissued demos and outtakes from the '60s, appeared in 1999.

Alkatraz - Doing A Moonlight (1976)

I remember seeing these guys when they first came out - In 1974 supporting The Man Band and they were OK.

They sound very similar to the Neutrons (Another Man related band) although the songs have more Guitar than the Neutrons had, some songs remind me of Thin Lizzy too (another band I love). If you look back you'll maybe remember that in 1976 this kind of music was being rejected in favour of the Clash the Sex Pistols and the Damned.

Tracks:
01 - Stay Out Of Town
02 - Red Lights
03 - Zen Cookies
04 - Nito Bendito
05 - The Ounze That Jack Built
06 - Maybe Monday
07 - Nobody Like You
08 - Every Night And day / Ti Jean
09 - Dedicated To Jack Kerouac

The songs all sound similar to the Neutrons with more substance in the final sound. So if you think you liked the Neutrons even in a small way you will love this.

I only found 1 reference to the band on the Net and that was on a Man Band history page which said this:

Meanwhile, after his stint in The Neutrons, Will Youatt joined up with his ex-Quicksand partner James Davies to found Alkatraz, a fabulous and all too short-lived band who we'd hoped would carry the Welsh rock flag into the eighties. Their one release, Doing A Moonlight, is a really superb example of intelligent and well-executed guitar based rock.

Included are 2 Bonus tracks taken from a BBC Radio 1 broadcast 2 years before the album was released when they toured as support act to the Man Band. They sound very different then and more like straight Hard Rock .

Los Mac's - 1967 - Kaleidoscope Men

Los Mac's were formed in Valparaiso, Chile, in 1962 by the Mc Iver brothers. They soon moved to Santiago, where Willy Morales and Eric Franklin joined the band. 'Kaleidoscope Men' (1967) was their third album and they consider it 'The best psychedelic album ever produced in Chile' -and as soon as you listen to it you will have to agree with them. Influenced by 'Sgt. Pepper's' as much as by marihuana, with a superb production and a band musically skilled and ready to go one step beyond, this is a MUST-HAVE album for any 60's music lover.

Peter Pollack - guitar

All the songs on the album were written by Ray Levin and arranged by the band.

Bio :
Garage punk combo the Little Boy Blues were formed in 1964 by singer/guitarist Lowell Shyette, lead guitarist Paul Ostroff, bassist Ray Levin, and drummer James Boyce, all of them students at the University of Illinois at Chicago. After honing a repertoire consisting primarily of Chicago blues classics and early rock & roll hits, the group was approached by the local IRC label to make a record, albeit on the condition they abandon their bluesy sound in favor of a more commercial, British Invasion-inspired approach. The Little Boy Blues agreed and in 1965 issued the Shyette-penned "Love for a Day," a major hit on Chicago radio that earned the band opening gigs for acts including the Rolling Stones, the Lovin' Spoonful, and the Association. Second vocalist Billy McColl was typically recruited for live dates, also appearing on their sophomore single, "I'm Ready" -- a cover of the Willie Dixon tune recorded in the Little Boy Blues' increasingly aggressive and noisy style, it was another local hit.

Their fuzz-punk approach reached its apotheosis on the follow-up, a blistering reading of the garage staple "I Can Only Give You Everything" -- already a Chicagoland favorite thanks to their weekly appearances at the popular nightspot the Like Young, the single appeared ready to launch the Little Boy Blues to national fame after they appeared on the Dick Clark television series Where the Action Is, but in September 1966 Shyette was drafted into Army duty, crippling the band's momentum. Singer Frank Biner was tapped as Shyette's replacement, and after leaving IRC for the Ronko label, the Little Boy Blues issued their fourth single, the 1967 acid punk classic "The Great Train Robbery" -- as the year wore on the group moved further into psychedelia, playing at local "be-ins" and headlining at Chicago counterculture clubs like the Cheetah and the Electric Playground.

The change in musical direction did not please McColl or Ostroff, both of whom left the band -- guitarist Peter Pollack was eventually hired on around the time the Little Boy Blues signed to record an LP for major label Mercury, but midway through recording both Biner and Boyce quit over creative differences. Singer Marc Coplon and drummer Bill Mooney were hastily recruited to complete the album, a disappointing patchwork effort released in 1968 under the title In the Woodland of Weir. The Little Boy Blues continued for about a year before disbanding.

The D.R. Hooker Band: "Armageddon" 1979, USA/On Records 40725. This is not the 80s repressing, it's the 1979 original pressed and distributed by D.R. himself! Incredibly rare private second LP recorded in 1974 has a more elaborate prog sound than his legendary "The Truth" debut from 1972 but still has a living room feel.

Everyone knows his first album The truth which is a masterpiece of all times...
If not get it first

This album is not as nice as the first but still great IMO. Crazy Dr Hooker is all over with sounds and voices that make it tripy psyche

.
Tangerine Peel was best known during the second half of the 1960s as a five-man psychedelic band, specializing in a slightly light but pleasant brand of the music. Their principal claim to fame was the presence of future songwriter/producer Mike Chapman in their ranks during the late '60s, when they cut records such as their version of the Bee Gees' "Every Christian Lion-Hearted Man Will Show You," cut for British United Artists in 1967. Subsequent singles included "Solid Gold Mountain" and "Talking to No One" for British CBS, and "Never Say Never Again" and "Play Me a Sad Song and I'll Dance" for British MGM. Chapman left before the group recorded its one and only LP, Soft Delights, in 1970. By that time, the group had abandoned its psychedelic influences in favor of a more conventional pop/rock sound. The group's version of "Every Christian Lion-Hearted Man Will Show You" was reissued in 2004 on Castle's Maybe Someone Is Digging Underground: Songs of the Bee Gees. ~ Bruce Eder, All Music Guide
.
MIKE CHAPMAN and friends in 1970 put out a REALLY GREAT lp titled 'SOFT THOUGHTS'...this album has a wide variety of sound from pysch, heavy rock, folk, to bubblegum, this is indeed a TRUE lost gem...the lp kicks off with 'CINDY LOU'...with trashy electric guitars in top form, this song sounds like the inside of a pinball machine crunching along, with lyrics such as 'oh sweet, sweet, sweet, cindy lou, and the sweet, sweet, sweet, things you do' !...next song the title track 'soft delights', a bubblegum song, sunshine pop with the trademark drum stomp,..... sounds like a cornerstone sound of MUD and SWEET,....naturally since he would produce both bands a few yrs later....
'GOODNIGHT TO THE NIGHT' changes the pace, this one is a soft folk tune with wonderful piano, that takes you to another time, another place...*...side 1 ends with 'what am i to do' with such lyrics such as 'and in front of me stands a girl who will tear and break down my world'...side 2 begins with 'TALKIN' 'BOUT A NEW DAY'...great revolutionary spirit, and the song reaches for new musical heights...every song is great including 'to judi' a love song, and the lp eds with 'MOMENTS I RECALL' where the singer travels through his memory to bring forth thoughts of wonderment,.....someone tell us if TANGERINE PEEL ever released another lp... ......?

Bonzo Dog Band - 1968 - The Doughnut in Granny's Greenhouse

http://Bonzo_Dog_Band_-_The_Doughnut_s_in_Granny_s_Greenhouse.rar

Taking the "Doo Dah" out of their name for this 1968 LP, the Bonzos' second album was probably their best. Although they were hardly a rock or pop group in the traditional sense, the Bonzos couldn't help absorbing some of the vibes of British psychedelia, and the heady ambience of the era is reflected in the recklessly diverse and outrageous material. Almost all of the songs were penned by the two top dogs, Viv Stanshall and Neil Innes, who deflate British blues, psychedelia, and other pop, jazz, and music hall styles with priceless wit. Star tracks on this saxophone-heavy album include the doo wop ode to a spacegirl ("Beautiful Zelda"), "Trouser Press" (which gave the late American underground rock magazine its name), the droll series of poker-faced spoken sketches on "Rhinocratic Oaths" (certainly an influence on Monty Python), and the boozy "My Pink Half of the Drainpipe," which ranks as one of the most ridiculous and hysterical songs released by a pop group of any era.

The Zoo - 1968 - Presents Chocolate Mouse

Chocolate Moose
Written on the Wind

I've Been Waiting Too Long

Soul Drippin's

Get Some Beads

Ain't Nobody

Have You Been Sleepin'

Try Me

Love Machine

From a Camels Hump

Although California-based Zoo managed to produce only a single album during their short career, it is surprising how fresh and relevant this record still is, some 36 years on.

Formed in 1968 by Murphy ‘Chocolate Moose’ Carfagna, the band also featured Mike Flicker on drums and Howard Leese on lead guitar both of whom went on to join Heart, Leese as guitarist and Flicker as the band’s producer.

Chocolate Moose was released in 1968 on Ed Cobb’s Sunburst label (Sunburst 7500) and is far more than just a rock album. Its strong punk and psychedelic tendencies, coupled with a smattering of R’n’B, propel the album with an energetic vitality that is underpinned by Leese’s searing guitar.

The album, rare at the time, has now become a major collectors item. Give it a listen and it’s easy to understand why.

Great phychedelic album from the era and very well known to collectors.

Enjoy!

From AMG
Upon its release in early 1968, Ultimate Spinach's self-titled debut was derided by some as second-rate psychedelia, selling reasonably well only by virtue of its hype as part of the "Bosstown Sound." So how does it sound decades later, removed from that hype and standing on the music alone? It still sounds like bush league, bandwagon-riding psychedelia. Ian Bruce Douglas dominates the record as lead singer, composer of all the songs, and multi-instrumentalist, and while he espoused a darker vision than many psychedelic songsmiths, he wasn't in remotely the same league as Jim Morrison, Grace Slick, or Country Joe McDonald. Such comparisons are not idly chosen; echoes of the Doors, Jefferson Airplae, and Country Joe and the Fish cross over into derivation more than once, sounding like a recombination of 1967 West Coast psychedelic music that was garbled on its journey across the continent. All the same, the record is their best, for what that's worth. It is not without some attractive aspects, the best of which are Douglas' skittering, piercing organ lines heard to superior effect on "Sacrifice of the Moon," especially as that is unencumbered by his awkward, over-serious lyrics ("collapsed laughter, running, falling, drifting across the minefield of your thoughts, dissolve, wondering, who am I, why should I be alone, alone?"). He likely played Country Joe & the Fish's first LP over and over, as "Sacrifice of the Moon" and "Baroque #1" attest to; "Baroque #1" goes as far as to plagiarize Country Joe's "Masked Marauder," right down to the harmonica and scat vocals. Similarly, "Your Head Is Reeling" has grungy, distorted Doors guitar lifted straight out of Robby Krieger's intro to "The End." As Bruce-Douglas' vocals are only adequate, it's unfortunate more was not heard from guitarist and occasional lead singer Barbara Hudson, who has the kind of ice-cool style trendy among the female psychedelic singers of the era.

Sam Gopal Dream was the soft and trippy raga ensemble fronted by tabla player Sam Gopal. Around the same time they used to play at the UFO in London, Ian Willis (aka Lemmy) was a roadie for Jimi Hendrix, after leaving his Mod band The Rocking Vicars.

The band Sam Gopal plays acid rock for stoners favoring the dark side. Sam Gopal fronts the band and still plays tabla, but Lemmy's voice is the loudest thing in the mix, and his fuzzed-out guitar is all over the disc. He also wrote most of the songs. This record originally came out in 1969 on Stable Records, an obscure label formed by Simon Stable. This label only put out two releases: the Sam Gopal record and The Deviants Disposable.

Another great pcychedelic/garage band from the 60's. It contains the hit "Action Woman" which was originally recorded by them. The bonus songs are a must to be listened to.

From AMG
One of Minneapolis' most popular '60s bands, the Litter are most known for their classic 1967 garage rock single "Action Woman." With its demonic fuzz/feedback guitar riffs and cocky, snarling lead vocal, it was an archetype of the tough '60s garage rock favored by fans of the Pebbles reissue series. In fact, the single, which got some airplay in Minnesota in early 1967 and then was largely forgotten, didn't reach an international audience until it became cut one, Side One on Volume One of Pebbles in the late '70s. It now has a place of honor on the Nuggets box set. The Litter were a little more successful and long-lived than the average regional garage band, recording a few albums, the last one for a major label, and evolving into a more progressive hard rock outfit before disbanding around the end of the '60s.

The Litter was formed by members of two Minneapolis area mid-'60s groups, the Victors and the Tabs. Heavily influenced by the fiercest British Invasion bands, such as the Yardbirds and the Who, they recorded their debut single, "Action Woman"/"A Legal Matter," with local producer Warren Kendrick in late 1966. "Action Woman," in fact, was not a Litter original, but a Kendrick composition. Bill Strandlof, who had played the searing guitar lead on "Action Woman," was replaced by Tom Caplan in the spring of 1967, just before they recorded most of the tracks that comprised their debut album. Leaning heavily on covers of songs by British bands like the Yardbirds, the Who, and Small Faces Distortions was nevertheless a prime example of sixties garage rock at its most powerful. With the garage rock revival this local release became a coveted collector's item, and has since been reissued several times.

13. Voyage
14. Breeze
15. 3 X Time

The non-LP single "Scene Through the Eye of a Lens" b/w "Gypsy Woman" not withstanding, Music in a Doll's House (1968) is the debut full-length release from the earliest incarnation of Family, featuring Roger Chapman (harmonica/tenor sax/vocals), Rick Grech (violin/ cello/bass guitar/vocals), Rob Townsend (percussion/drums), John "Charlie" Whitney (guitar/pedal steel guitar/keyboards), and Jim King (harmonica/keyboards/soprano sax/tenor sax/vocals).

Their highly original sound has often been compared to Traffic, which may be in part due to the production skills of Jimmy Miller and Dave Mason, the latter also contributing the organic and rootsy rocker "Never Like This." Additionally, neither band was overtly psychedelic or progressive, contrasting them from the other burgeoning combos such as Soft Machine, Pink Floyd, and Caravan.

Family's deceptively involved arrangements are coupled with an equally unique blend of Chapman's commanding vocals driving through the jazz and folk-rooted tunes. "The Chase" is a spirited opener that immediately establishes their unmistakable vibe, which is furthered on the sides "Old Songs for New Songs" and the aggressive rocker "Peace of Mind." The antithesis can be heard on the rural-flavored "Mellowing Grey" and "Winter," or perhaps the almost blatantly trippy "See Through Windows."

In 1996, See for Miles issued Music in a Doll's House along with Family Entertainment (1969) on a double-disc anthology, including the previously mentioned pre-LP 7" "Scene Through the Eye of a Lens" b/w "Gypsy Woman," both of which have been released on compact disc for the first time here. The package additionally boasts a 40-page booklet and hardback CD jacket, while the audio has been digitally remastered utilizing Super Bit Mapping.

Arzachel - 1969 - Arzachel

Another must have, though I assume many of you have heard this one already! One of the most highly revered psychedelic albums of all time.

http://rapidshare.com/files/42193232/Arzachel-_Arzachel.rar

Allmusic:
This is one of the real delights of late '60s heavy psych. Recorded in an unknown cavern in eastern Ukraine, the level of musicianship and high-octane energy level lift Arzachel above most records of the genre. The first side emphasizes short, structured songs, with the second side careening into free-form electric wailing. "Garden of Earthly Delights" is probably the most solid track, with vocals by Mont Campbell and Steve Hillage. Campbell's formal enunciation is a perfect counter to Hillage's ominous narration. "Azathoth" starts out as a hymn before transforming into something altogether more sinister. "Soul Thing/Queen St. Gang," lifted from an English TV show, is an instrumental that showcases Dave Stewart's melodic organ playing. Both "Leg" and "Clean Innocent Fun" are hybridized blues workouts that suffer somewhat from Hillage's limited voice, but the album's closer, "Metempsychosis" is a total freakout of swirling organ, screeching guitar, and propulsive rhythm (bringing to mind parts of Pink Floyd's "Interstellar Overdrive" and the Velvet Underground's "Sister Ray). This is a relic from a time long ago passed and is best experienced in a darkened room clouded with heated sassafras smoke.

Changes - 2004 Release - Orphan In The Storm @224 kbps (US Dark Folk Duo)c

Changes, the duo consisting of R. N. Taylor and Nicholas Tesluk was founded in 1969 in Chicago, Illinois. Though this was the year that they realized they could join forces at song writing, due to Robert's ability to write beautiful poems and lyric poetry, and Nicholas' ability to write melodies, they, in fact, being first cousins, have been together since infancy.

Nicholas was born in Chicago but actually raised about forty miles north in the small idyllic village of Wildwood, Illinois. His family moved there when he was about three years old and at the time theirs (a house that his father built) was one of the very few houses that existed in this area. With mostly farm fields nearby and a small pair of lakes (called "Twin Lakes" but actually two mosquito-breeding ponds which were only about six feet deep in the center) in a wooded area about 100 yards from his house, he and his friends would have joyous times exploring the area like Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn. One of these little lakes had a small island in the center and they would oftentimes raft across to the island which became their little hideaway. In the winter, which in Illinois were frequently unbearably cold, he and his friends would sometimes play ice hockey in the middle of the night since the main lake had a switchable light to illuminate it. This small-town country setting of Nicholas' formative years gave him a childlike naivete which he fortunately (pretty much) outgrew when later exposed to the "outside" world. During these early years Robert would take the train, as northern Illinois has an excellent rail system, north to visit Nicholas frequently and Nicholas and his family would often drive to Chicago to visit Robert's family. Nicholas lived in this same house until high school graduation at which time he was, as many teens his age, uncertain of what he wanted to do with his life. He finally decided on continuing education at an institute of technology in Chicago. Incidentally, when visited today the same little village of Wildwood in which he was raised is very highly populated and though still in a country setting, no longer resembles the simple place that Nicholas had known as a youth.

Robert, who was born in Chicago and also (as previously stated) raised there, was a streetwise city kid, as opposed to the "country boy" mannerisms that somewhat characterized Nicholas. From an early age, life in the city was predicated on a "survival of the fittest" life and "pecking order" of youths and teens similar to that depicted in many "coming of age" stories in addition to the play/motion picture entitled "West Side Story". Robert, who always kept himself in good physical shape would stand toe-to-toe with any of the other kids, no matter their size or age, and usually come out victorious. He and his friends, all being members of a "street gang", would fight other "gangs" for supremacy. As mentioned in other writings, though this seems potentially dangerous (especially if one thinks of the "drugged-up" punk gangs of today), it was more or less a "romantic coming of age" ritual of the mid to late 50s. Though these were, in fact, violent street fights, there weren't usually guys packing firearms, as today, and the point was not to kill the members of the other side, or someone caught in the crossfire, but instead to reign victorious over the area and become "king of the hill" so to speak. This is not to say that people weren't ever injured or killed but that wasn't the main goal of this form of city warfare. Aside from street life, Robert was always reading books and writing stories and poems and painting pictures. This in addition to the fact that he had great interest and love of history. One remembers when visiting him during his teen years of the large paintings in black line art on his bedroom wall. Two remain vivid memories. One of the stone monolithic faces, Moai, from Easter Island, and the other a life-size standing nude woman seen from behind. This "Renaissance man" lifestyle was most likely the dichotomy which characterized many warriors and artists throughout history. It was the ability to be passionate about and dedicated to everything one undertakes be it art, love or war.

Shortly before Nicholas graduated high school, Robert fell in love with and married a lady who lived on Chicago's west side in an area close to where Robert's family had previously lived before moving to the northwest side in the early 60s. Meanwhile, while attending college in Chicago, Nicholas lived with Robert's mother and father at this northwest side residence (his dear aunt and uncle were like a second set of parents to him) and lived with them for three years. Robert's marriage unfortunately dissolved later in this period and this was a very difficult time for him as he had loved this lady dearly. Robert moved back home for a while and he and Nicholas would get together often when Nicholas wasn't at school and they would go to a movie theater, to downtown Chicago, or in the summertime to beaches to pass the time and forget their worries.

It was also during these years that Robert became heavily involved in the paramilitary organization known as The Minutemen, of which several interviews and articles have been written, so there were usually several months at a time that Robert would be out of state carrying out his organizational and training functions with that group. After most of the dust had settled on these activities and Nicholas had received his degree from college they were together again pretty frequently and again passing time in the summer at the local Chicago beaches playing Robert's acoustic guitar when they happened on their first co-written song. At the beach one afternoon Nicholas developed an interesting chord progression and created a melody to it while Robert spontaneously wrote lyrics to fit the melody. The song was entitled "You're Always With Me" and though actually pretty awful (and will never see the light to one of their albums in any form), it led them to believe that they could, in fact, write songs together. An interesting side note, is that this first song was the only song that they have ever written as a team that Nicholas' music came before Robert's lyrics. On all others Nicholas has developed the music around Robert's lyric poetry. That was the summer of 1969 which turned out to be the beginning of it all for Changes.

Here's the tracklist:

1. Orphan in the Storm
2. Changes (Theme)
3. What's the Wind If It's Not Free?
4. Never So True
5. Icarus
6. Embarkation

Rebecca and the Sunnybrook Farmers - 1969 - Birth

Here are many odd things about the sole release from Rebecca and the Sunnybrook Farmers. First of all, the album was recorded in one weekend. The band drove up to New York from their hometown of Pittsburgh, recorded the album, and went home. Secondly, the album's label, Musicor Records, was primarily a country label. The only other hippie band on the label was the equally obscure Tingling Mothers Circus. Third, the bluegrass sounding band name; while hippies often DO have farms (especially indoor ones), the band name is hardly an indicator of the freakiness present on the album. And that's just the beginning: there are two Ilenes in the band (although one is really Lauren Wood), no one is actually named Rebecca, there is a violin player, and the band is nearly eclectic to a fault. And yet, the album holds together under the weight of all this strangeness, managing to deliver a solid set of songs that are enthsuiastically and imaginatively played

Side One is especially strong. "Two Blind Sisters" is a beautiful, baroque tearjerker, "Endless Trip" is a nice slice of West Coast pop, and "David and Sally" fairly represents the band's kooky, old-world side. Side two veers away from pop, with only slightly less success. "Better Dead than Red" starts off innocuously enough in a reflective, soft-psych mode, only to explode into a barrage of gunfire sound effects, whistles, and cacophonous drumming.

If you can track down a copy, I highly recommended this album, especially the songs composed and sung by Lauren Wood, a gifted songwriter who still plays to this day.

Wizards from Kansas - 1970 - Wizards from Kansas

Stunning West Coast sytled US '60s album from Kansas, which contains complex melodic vocal harmonies, soaring trippy guitar work and wonderful original songs. A dreamy, melodic sparkling gem of an album from start to finish. Along with Kak, HP Lovecraft and Tripsichord Music Box, this album is one of THE essential artifacts of the era (The Freak emporium).

The Wizards From Kansas' eponymous album finds this Midwestern group sounding more like a West Coast hybrid combining rambling, melancholy country-rock elements with harder psych-rock sounds. Their biggest influences seem to have been Northern California-based groups like the Jefferson Airplane, Quicksilver Messenger Service, and the Grateful Dead, and it shouldn't really come as a shock to discover that the Wizards From Kansas was recorded in San Francisco, between July and August of 1970.

Tracks
1. High Flying Bird
2. High Mister
3. 912 1/2 Mass
4. Codine
5. Freedom Speech
6. Flyaway Days
7. Misty Mountainside
8. Country Dawn
9. She Rides With Witches

The Reviews

1
A lost bit of psychedelic folk by The Wizards From Kansas -- a really unique album that's got a sound that's almost impossible to describe! At one level, these guys have picked up on the left of center folk sound of the late 60s -- work by Fred Neil or Tim Hardin come to mind -- but they've also got a harder rock sound at times, with fierce guitars sneaking into more complicated and earthy arrangements, almost as on some of Love's more guitar-driven albums. But comparisons to all other groups is a bit tough, too -- as the Wizards have a great sound that's all their own, and which stands in fine company with the best underground work of the time!

2
There is little I can add to the review above, except emotion. The references to the Airplane, are readily evident on this. There are moments of Steppenwolf as well. The gentleness of Crosby Stills & Nash is found here. The social thinking of Airplane, the pertinence of writing music during the time when this music was released is there.
The guitar work is equal to the Dead's easily. It fits and always seems right. SLightly psychedelic and always perfect. This music could easily turn into a long Dead jam at any second.

Various - The Shadoks Music Compilation (2002)

OK, you've already got the Nuggets sets, and maybe the Pebbles series, as well. Then came the great Love, Peace & Poetry series on QDK. Now you want some really obscure psychedelia. It's time to know about the Shadoks label out of Germany. They began life as Ten Little Indians, releasing a total of ten super-deluxe reissues of hopelessly obscure psychedelic music over the course of three years. Shadoks picks up where Ten Little Indians left off, releasing a great many slightly less deluxe reissues of equally obscure material. Since these bands were essentially no-hit wonders, it can be difficult to figure out where to begin an investigation of the label. Well, here's the Shadoks Music Compilation to the rescue. Eighteen cuts by 18 bands from the label, from the U.S., Britain, and beyond, and ranging from super heavy blues psych to twee folk psych, with all stops in between. Also included are brief band bios and album information. This budget release is a great way to figure out where you want to begin checking out other albums on the label, or just a quick way to increase the obscurity quotient in your music collection.

1) A Biker's Tune - Peacepipe
2) Quiabo's - Spectrum
3) Orange Float Petals - My Indole Ring
4) Keep On Rocking - Shiver
5) Morrison Heathcliff - Tony, Caro & John
6) The Direction - Framework
7) I Can See It - The New Tweedy Bros.
8) Sexual Fantasy #8 - Fate
9) Love Of A Woman - Juan De La Cruz Band
10) Self-Made God - Brigade
11) My World In Wax - Brain Police
12) Tell Me - The Walflower Complextion
13) Confusions - Voise From The Inner Soul - Simla Beat
14) Color Fantasy - Maitreya Kali

Time Out claimed that folk is the new jazz, but things have been pretty folky around here for some time. So I'm going to cut the Americana with some English folk that will at no point involve Arran Jumpers or fingers in the ear.

She was beautiful, played a fantastic guitar in the 'informed by Davey Graham' school of fingerpicking like everyone else from Jansch to Drake (a lot of the solo stuff sounds like better played versions of Nick Drake's home recordings - except they're not standards!) and there's a few pieces that show what can be done with a 12 string guitar in alternative tuning playing folk rather than blues that are astounding.

Two albums - Album and Stargazer are all she left behind before a bad trip and her mysterious disappearance in 1972.

The Hollies

The Hollies - 1967 - Evolution

Quality: 4 out of 5 (mono)
3.5 out of 5 (stereo)
Trip-O-Meter: 3 out of 5

Evolution is the Hollies first profound attempt to dive in the pool of psychedelia. Unlike the later Butterfly, the Hollies brand of Brit-pop doesn't mix particularly well with the psychedelic elements here. Like the weaker tracks on Butterfly, however, the songwriting saves the day and makes for a solid album.

This review focuses on the 2004 Japanese issue of both the mono and stereo Evolution along with the "Carrie Anne"/"Signs That Will Never Change" single.

The old adage that you can't judge a book by its cover applies to Evolution, but unfortunately not in its favor. The cover is an amazing image by The Fool which represents a paisley clad band seemingly reaching through the shrinkwrapping of the album. There is a strange psychedelic overlay consuming the image. The musical contents of the album, however, are basically solid British Invasion pop with some window dressing representing the more cutting egde bands of the period.

"Then The Heartaches Begin" is a solidly constructed opener with a touch of somewhat misplaced fuzz guitar. The first real winner here is in the slightly skewed ballad "Stop Right There." It has a perfect balance of melancholy and hesitant cheeriness that make it a prime candidate for the soundtrack of a future Wes Anderson film. The strange gypsy-like violin part weaving through the later part of the song helps to distinguish the ballad further.

The best parts of the album stay away from psychedelia and reaffirm the Hollies mastery of 1965 styled pop. "You Need Love," "When You're Light's Turned On," and "The Games We Play" would have been plumb singles two years earlier, but probably served to alienate their contemporary audience. "Have You Ever Loved Someone" makes the mistake of using fuzz guitar on what should be a poppier track. The result comes out like The Beach Boys' similarly misguided "Bluebirds Over The Mountain." "Rain On The Windows" add a bit of reverberating orchestation to color its sound to better effect, and the helium voices in "Water On The Brain" anticipates some of the later sound experiments on Butterfly.

Evolution remains strong despite a few questionable decisions, and only grinds to a standstill on two tracks. "Lulluby To Tim" utilized a truely grating warbling vocal effect, while "Ye Olde Toffee Shop" is dated in the most flagrantly twee manner. It's like Willy Wonka, sans any irony, and tends to make me cringe a little bit.

This disc's value is upgraded by the wonderful "Carrie Anne"/"Signs That Will Never Change" single. "Carrie Anne" has some of the best vocal harmonies recorded in the 60's and spices things up a bit with some bongo action. The B-side doesn't overshadow the main attraction, but it's a very pleasant album quality track with a groovy bassline and manages to point towards the future a little more than the past.

Evolution is very much superior in its mono incarnation, with the stereo tracks sporting poorly considered stereo separation and a lack of balance or impact.

Although a little spotty, Evolution provides an interesting bridge between the Hollies beat-based sound of their early albums and the full-on psychedelia of their Butterfly period. The pop aspects are still the main attributes here and the sometimes indiscreet and missplaced psychedelic aspects don't completely ruin the sound.

Although the Hollies were one of Britain's biggest pop bands in the 60's, they would remain relatively obscure in the States until the 70's, by which time Graham Nash had left the band and the remaining members had converted to a rather schmaltzy soft rock band. Butterfly is a prime piece of British psyche pop which has never really been noticed in the US. In fact, I'm not sure if it has had a proper American release to this date. I'll be reviewing the 2004 Japanese reissue which includes the mono and stereo British release plus the "King Midas In Reverse"/"Everything Is Sunshine" single.

One of the unfortunate conceits of British psych is that band's ideas and intentions often surpassed their recording capacity. Butterfly escapes this fate as the Hollies had recent hits such as "Carrie Ann" and "On A Carousel" and benefitted from a A-list recording budget. Thus, Butterfly features plenty of exotic instrumentation and full, live orchestration. Much of their experimentation on the album reflected other prominent releases of the past year (Sgt. Peppers, The Byrds' Younger Than Yesterday, etc.) but these ideas had not yet passed their freshness date and the phenomenal songwriting of Clarke-Hicks-Nash more than compensated for any redundancies.

Apparently, the band as a whole was not too excited about the dive into psychedelia that they had begun with Evolution and continued here. But it was the prevailing style of 1967 and Graham Nash was gung-ho about taking that direction. This caused creative strain and Graham Nash would depart for America shortly after this album, but on Butterfly the tension provides a perfect balance between pop and psychedelia.

Butterfly starts with "Dear Eloise," a lurching number that provides sort of a manifesto for the rest of the album with it's tripped out mellotron passage shifting into a full blast pop-rock section rivaling even some of the better Lennon/McCartney singles. Nash would also specifically reference The Beatles on the sitar-laden "Maker," which is not as complex as George Harrison's sitar excursions, but has more of an immediate pop edge.

The band scores a couple of should-have-been singles with the soaring "Would You Believe," which is my personal favorite on the album, and the poppy "Step Inside," which recalls prime 1965 Brit-invasion pop. On the other side of the spectrum, the band tries to search for the astral sounds of the day on the one-two punch of "Try It" and "Elevated Observations?" In full disclosure, their "experimentation" here is rather tepid when compared with Syd Barrett's Pink Floyd, The Soft Machine, or a host of the edgier psych bands, but their pop instincts save the day and make the songs enjoyable, if a bit dated. The one major misstep is the silly lyrics and goofy orchestration on "Pegasus." This song has missed most US Hollies compilations, and it's not really worth searching out if you don't already have it. The closing title track is a much better bit of orchestration, and sound of a piece with contemporary Moody Blues efforts.

"King Midas In Reverse," which may be The Hollies' best psychedelic number, includes amazing vocal harmonies and what starts as deceptively simple production morphing into a huge orchestral wall of sound. "Everything Is Sunshine" is an enjoyable but run-of-the-mill B-side.

My release includes the mono and stereo versions of all of the tracks. As is common with British 60's pop, the mono mix was intended as the definitive mix while the stereo was almost an afterthought. This is especially true here as the mono mixes are finely textured and provides a punch in all the right places. Unfortunately the stereo mix suffers from pointless separation and poor balance that weakens the sound and immediacy of many songs. I only listen to the stereo version as an occasional curiosity and in fact rate it a full point lower than the mono.

Butterfly is a somewhat neglected release that I believe is one of the definitive psychedelic pop albums. You may recognize "Dear Eloise" and "King Midas In Reverse" from airplay (or not, they don't get played that often) but there are plenty of other tracks here to match the majesty of those songs.

Breakout - 1969 - Na Drugim Brzegu Tęczy

1. Poszłabym za tobą
2. Nie ukrywaj - wszystko wiem
3. Na drugim brzegu tęczy
4. Czy mnie jeszcze pamiętasz?
5. Wołanie przez Dunajec
6. Masz na to czas
7. Gdybyś kochał, hej!
8. Powiedzieliśmy już wszystko
9. Gdzie chcesz iść...
10. Po ten księżyc złoty

This album is a classic of polish pop music, definitely one of the best pieces. A pillar of what is called BIGBEAT here in central europe (especially in former Czechoslovakia). The band Breakout was formed by phenomenal guitarist Tadeusz Nalepa after the breakup of his former group Blackout, and this was their debut album. Breakout is referred to as a blues-rock band, and we can find a lot of blues on this album. For example in a great blues song Nie ukrywaj, wszystko wiem, or in the opening track. The album also contains Breakout's classic hit Gdybyś kochał, hej, psychedelic elements in the title track, but also in the above mentioned opening one, beautiful Czesław Niemen's cover Czy mnie jeszcze pamiętasz?, another cover, of the former Blackout's song Gdzie chcesz iść, great songs Powiedzieliśmy już wszystko and Masz na to czas and a little joke with the closing track.

I love this album and I think you will love it too.

C.A. Quintet - 1968 - Trip Thru Hell

C.A. Quintet - 1968 - Trip Thru Hell
(Sundazed reissue, 1995)

Biography

Virtually no one outside Minneapolis heard of the C.A. Quintet during their late-'60s heyday. It was their fortune (or curse) to actually reach a considerably bigger international audience when their album was reissued in the '80s. Starting as a rather conventional pop-soul/garage band, their one and only album, Trip Thru Hell (1968), was a worthy slice of dark psychedelia. With spooky organ and the occasional trumpet of singer/songwriter Ken Erwin, the group's murky and macabre vision -- dotted with trips through hell, cold spiders, Colorado mornings, and the like -- was genuinely original and chilling. Trip Thru Hell only sold 700-800 copies when it was first issued, but after gaining status among hardcore '60s psychedelic collectors, it was reissued in 1983. The group also released a few non-LP singles in 1967 and 1968, most in a much poppier vein.

Review
There's not much to compare this album to, even in the weird musical climate of 1968 -- there are echoes of Country Joe & The Fish and the Doors, perhaps, in the mysterioso organ and morbid imagery. Not that Ken Erwin was in the same league as Jim Morrison, or even Country Joe, as a songwriter. But (with the exception of the brassy good-time cut "Underground Music"), psychedelia was very rarely this dementedly gloomy. Occasional pealing bells and curdling screams (to say nothing of the Boschlike cover art) add to the foggy underworld menace. Reissued without authorization in Europe in the 1980s, the 1995 domestic CD is a first-class job: the 12 bonus cuts gather some rare non-LP singles, alternate takes, and previously unreleased songs, and the liner notes feature extensive interviews with Ken Erwin and engineer Steve Longman. The Great Scots - The Great Lost Great Scots Album !!!

While determining just who was America's or Britain's greatest rock & roll band will forever be in doubt, the list gets whittled down to one name when figuring out who was the biggest group from Nova Scotia: the Great Scots. From Halifax, the Scots cut three singles of wild punk music, loaded with solid playing and great screaming vocals.

The group began officially in 1963 as the Shadows, changing their name to the Beavers (all wearing Mohawk haircuts) the following year and finally becoming the Great Scots by December 1964. The original lineup consisted of guitarist Bill Schnare, singer Rick McNeil, bassist Dave Isnor, drummer Gerry Archer and guitarist Wayne Forrest. Hailed in the Canadian press as "Canada's answer to the Beatles," the group flew down to California in 1965, looking for bigger horizons to conquer. Working out of Hollywood during that time period, the group capitalized on their Scottish heritage and wore Nova Scotian tartan kilts onstage, causing quite a stir everywhere they played. Hooking up with producer (and Challengers drummer) Richard Delvey, the Scots hit the charts with "Run For Your Life," "The Light Hurts My Eyes" and "Miracle Worker," also issuing sides under the name Free For All. No teenage primitive fuzz box and Farfisa organ garage band, the Scots sported solid harmonies and a wide musical palette that embraced everything from blues to rock & roll to a smattering of jazz.

Their fame in California grew by leaps and bounds, doing guest shots on both American Bandstand and Shindig!, being featured in various teen magazines, working big package shows and receiving the key to the city from the mayor of Santa Barbara, California. But the good times came to a quick end by 1967 because of the Vietnam War. The members had permanent visas, meaning they were all eligible for the draft. When Dave Isnor was plucked from the group and spent two years in the American Armed Forces, the others members called it a day and moved back to Canada. With all the members still living close to each other, the band still reunites every Labor Day to play and reminisce about their short-lived heyday. The Great Scots' ride on the show business rocket may have been a short one, but for a self described "bunch of virgin kids from Halifax," it was the ride of a lifetime.

"Classic, scratchy, itchy garage rock from Montreal circa 1966. That was the year The Haunted's first single, "1-2-5" was released, making it to the Canadian charts and raising some eyebrows in the US and Europe. But subsequent years saw their label's lack of support push the band to obscurity (an old story).

Finding obvious inspiration in the Stones, Them, and the Kinks, the Haunted added their own stamp to the hot sound of that time and were unafraid to tackle classic-bound material ("Out of Time" by the Stones, "Purple Haze" by Hendrix (um, in French), Sam Cooke's "Shake"), unafraid to add a soulful edge to their garagey sound, and most refreshingly, knew exactly where to use those tambourines and harmonicas to near-excess ("1-2-5", "Eight O'Clock This Morning").

There are blatant rips of classic melodies that are so obvious one would think the band was working some kind of in-joke at the time: Donovan's "Season of the Witch" becomes "Run Down Every Street". At any rate, this stuff makes one long for a time when soul/punk/garage/pop, all rolled together into one glorious whole, ruled rock 'n' roll airwaves, and you could hear The Haunted right next to Otis Redding on your radio. Boy, I bet those were the days." - Lorry Fleming

"The Haunted came out of Montreal, Quebec, with a dirty and scruffy bad boys image. Formed by Jurgen Peter, it has previously been reported that the band formed as an instrumental group called The Blue Jays in late 1963. This is now known to be incorrect, although the band did start out playing instrumentals, with Bob Burgess on bass, The Blue J's were a separate high-school act for whom Jurgen Peter stood in on guitar once for one gig which was broadcast on local radio.

Jurgen Peter:- "In Canada, in the early '60s, there was no such thing as a commercial music industry. The DJ's played only American records and it was common knowledge that they lived off "payola" from the record companies. When we, The Haunted, started to play as a band in the Montreal area, there was no way to get a recording contract, no one to play your records, no booking agency to book us, no large shows and paying gigs to play at, no music magazine or anything like it to promote a local band."

"I had to scout out large halls and skating arenas and rent them from the local communities for a Friday night show/dance. Then I went to the local school commission and rented six or seven school busses for that night in order to 'import' our home based Fan Club. I soon found out that if you hired the local DJ to be the master of ceremonies at your show, and gave him a percentage of the gate, he would plug that show all week long without having to buy airtime at a ridiculous price, and if you did have a record, he would actually play it on the air. With the explosion and dominance of the British bands Canada wanted to follow suit and soon the local record companies and radio stations smelled money and latched on to the bands that had the most following."

"I also realized that I needed a 'vehicle' that would promote The Haunted so I got together with one of our Montreal DJ Dave Boxer from CFCF. (He later brought The Beatles into Canada) and formed and incorporated both a bi-weekly music paper ('Music Trend') and a booking agency (Groups And Sound Service aka GASS.) After a successful show, the public wanted to come back the following week and it gave me an opportunity to book some of the other local bands."

In 1965, David Wynne joined from The Rabble, swapping places with Brian Robillard. David:- "I played with The Haunted at the Montreal Forum when we won a Battle of the Bands competition. The prize was a recording session where we cut 1-2-5. Afterwards, Mason left and Michel St German of Les Sinners was hired temporarily to fill-in. Other bands in the competition included David Clayton-Thomas, The Shays and Les Classels etc."

Their first 45, the garage classic 1-2-5 was a hit in Canada in April 1966 and was subsequently released in the U.S.A., Australia and some European countries. On early pressings the group's name was erroneously spelt as The Hunted. Co-written by Burgess and Peter, the 'A' side was a garage punk effort noticeable for its harmonica. The flip was another relatively catchy punk rocker.

Shortly after recording the second 45, David Wynne, left the band. (Though soon afterwards he joined Influence.) A new Haunted line-up (E) came into place, but after the release of, I Can Only Give You Everything which was in a similar style to 1-2-5 and also a minor hit, they left Quality Records for Trans-World. Burgess left too after a row with Peter." - Haunted website

Review :
Patchy but occasionally worthwhile British psychedelia, particularly when it's on the brooding side of that sub-genre. The heavy guitars and organ put this on the path to progressive rock, but the songs are rather more on the straightforward and popish side than those that Spooky Tooth would play when Art evolved into that group. "I Think I'm Going Weird" points to the morbid streak that would become sharper in Spooky Tooth; "African Thing," with its long African-styled drum solo, is the sort of strange, at least by the standards of 1967, item that groups would throw in to show they weren't limiting themselves to traditional rock forms anymore; "Come On Up" is almost a soul-rocker throwback to the V.I.P.s days; and the title track, with its mellotrons, is as close as Art got to the trippy baroque/whimsical mood that blew through so much British psychedelia in 1967 and 1968.
